Wolcott Garden Treasures
Rodents: If you’ve got a mole, vole or mouse problem, check out our page on rodent control for more information. While using chemical solutions carries a certain amount of risk, we do carry a few mole and vole repellent and poison options. However, do yourself (and your pets, and your kids) a favor, and read up on some of the safer, kinder, non-lethal alternatives. We also carry an all natural product from Bonide called Repels All, which uses touch, taste and smell to repel everything from rodents to raccoons.
Deer: Beautiful as they are, deer can be a real nuisance. Our dog will bark his head off in the middle of the night if he scents one walking through the back yard. They can also cause real problems in the garden, too. Check out our page on deer resistant gardening for a list of beautiful landscaping and decorating alternatives that won’t turn your property into a buffet.
We also carry a deer repellent spray that can be applied directly to foliage to help make it less palatable. Keep in mind, though, deer in this area seem to be remarkably resilient and tolerant of all our best attempts to keep them away. Nothing is foolproof, but when using the repellent spray, you might also want to try spraying the perimeter of your yard to keep the deer from entering in the first place. Unfortunately, chances are, once they get a taste of your garden, repellent-sprayed or otherwise, they’ll probably continue to eat it.
Cats: We carry a granular, all-natural product from Bonide that repels dogs, cats and rabbits, and is mainly formulated to train domestic animals not to use your garden as a bathroom. We also carry a product called “Bad Cat,” which is a spray-on training scent that teaches cats that the garden is not a litter box. It’s pleasant smelling to humans, is non-toxic, and camouflages the scent of cat waste.
All the Rest! We keep coming back to this product, time and time again, but Bonide's all natural Repels All is formulated to safely and effectively make your lawn and garden repulsive to a whole list of animals: birds (including crows), mice & rats, moles & voles, cats, deer, beavers, porcupines, groundhogs, rabbits, raccoons, skunks, shrews, and yes, even armadillos (those pesky creatures!). It lasts up to two months and is rain fast six hours after application.
The Natural Route. We've compiled a list of potential problem animals and their natural predators. Urine of the predator can be used to keep the problem animal out of certain areas. This is particularly helpful, as well, when training pets to stay out of your gardens. We have not had great luck selling urine products, so we no longer carry them. However, a Google search will likely produce a list of retailers that offer and ship the product.
