Nothing says summer like a backyard full of fluttering butterflies. Here are some plants that are particularly attractive to our native butterflies: Agastache (Anise Hyssop): a hardy, full sun perennial, Anise Hyssop blooms in shades of blue, lavender and pink on top of dark green, aromatic foliage. Butterfly Bush: : aptly named, Butterfly Bush is a butterfly magnet! Available in a myriad of shapes, colors and sizes, these later summer bloomers will wash your garden in color. Coreopsis: also known as Tickseed, Coreopsis is a compact growing perennial with hairy, narrow foliage. Single yellow flowers bloom on pale, 6-18”green stems at various times throughout the season, depending on the variety. Hollyhocks: these old-fashioned perennials have long, strong stems and heart-shaped leaves. Blooming in the summer in various shades of red and white, Hollyhocks will reach 72” tall. Lobelia: also known as Cardinal Flower, Lobelia boasts brilliant, star-shaped flower clusters atop 3’ stems. Particularly good along a path or pond edge, this perennial comes in a rainbow of colors that bloom in the late summer and reach 24-36” in height. Pincushion Flower: this trouble-free, compact perennial is ideal for sunny borders or patios, and is also excellent in arrangements, too. Flowers bloom at various times in the season, depending on the variety, and will reach 12-15” overall. Veronica: also known as Speedwell, Veronica is a low-growing, long-flowering perennial with dense flower spikes that is particularly suited for rock gardens. Available in a rainbow of colors and various bloom times, this plant will grow from 3-36” tall depending on the variety. Delphinium (Pacific Giants Larkspur): this perennial forms magnificent flower spires in the summer. Available in a number of varieties, Delphinium blooms in all shades and colors and will grow from 24” to 6’ tall, depending on the variety.
