Quantity, Price & Delivery

Pick-up or delivery
: If you have a truck or landscape trailer, we can load you by the yard with our bulk mulch.  If you are not able to pick up the mulch at our store, we can also deliver to you by appointment.  Please call for a delivery quote - (203) 879-4049.

Bagged mulch: if you've got a smaller job, we carry natural cedar, dyed red cedar, dyed black cedar and dyed brown cedar in 3 cubic foot bags.  The natural and red varieties are the same products we carry in bulk.  The dyed brown and dyed black cedar look slightly different than the brown and black dyed mulch we carry in bulk, but they're similar in appearance.  It takes approximately 9-10 three cubic foot bags of mulch to equal one yard of bulk mulch.

Coverage: one yard of mulch covers approximately 100 square feet 3" deep.  That's about a 10'x10' garden.

Price: Please call us for a quote on bulk or bagged mulch - (203) 879-4049.

Understanding mulch and choosing the right product for your garden

Each delivery of mulch that we receive will differ slightly from the last, but for all intents and purposes, each variety of mulch is similar in size and texture.  Except for our natural cedar, all our mulches are dyed using a non-toxic dye that is similar to food coloring.  The non-cedar mulches are dyed outdoors using a specified ratio of dye to wood product so the color is as consistent as possible; however, as with any dyed product, some of the color will wash out and fade over time as it is exposed to the elements.  Our red cedar is dyed indoors and kept under cover so the dye is as colorfast as possible.  While this dying technique will prevent washing out, it will still fade over time, as well.

Mulches, like all organic products, will decompose over time.  This is normal and extremely beneficial to your garden or flower bed.  Depending on the look you’re after, you’ll want to add new mulch from time to time, usually at least once in the spring.  When you get your mulch home, spread it out as quickly as you can and let it sit in the sun for a couple days to even out and set in the color. When adding new product to your existing mulch, you may wish to cover over it entirely, or mix it around a bit to create more consistent coloring.

As the name implies, our cedar mulches consist of 100% cedar bark.  Our other, non-cedar mulches are derived from a variety of native trees including, pine, hemlock & spruce, and include both the hardwood and the bark.

Concerns about treated mulch

Many customers have expressed concern about treated mulches.  Please rest assured, we DO NOT carry any mulches that are chemically treated - our mulches contain wood and high intensity food dye for color (except for the natural cedar which is dye-free) - that's it!

Some retailers sell mulch that is at least partially derived from stump grindings.  In many cases, stumps that are removed from the ground have been there for quite some time and may have ant, termite and other insect infestations.  This inferior quality wood, which is usually quite a bit cheaper than a higher quality mulch, is often treated with pesticides and chemicals to prevent infestations at the landscaping site.  Because we do not carry mulch from stump grindings, we have no reason to have our mulch treated with anything.

Our supplier of non-cedar mulches processes the entire tree for mulch - that means the finished product is made from hardwood and bark from the entire tree, roots to branches.  While the mulch may contain roots, this is different from stump grindings in that the entire tree is removed from the ground and processed at the same time, as opposed to processing only the leftover stump and roots that may have been sitting and rotting for quite a long time.  Our cedar mulches contain only bark.

How much can I fit in my truck?

Each yard of mulch weighs between 800 and 1,000 pounds, depending on the amount of moisture it is holding.  While most full-size trucks with an 8 foot bed will accommodate two yards, it’s important to check your vehicle’s maximum weight rating.  Just because it fits doesn’t mean your truck is equipped to hold that much weight!  We’re not responsible for determining what’s safe for your vehicle to carry, so if you tell us to load it, we will!  We’re not responsible for damage done to your vehicle due to carrying material in excess of the manufacturer’s recommended weight limit.

Do I need to do anything before you load my truck?

It seems like a given, but make sure you roll up your windows and close your sun roof - it's so easy to forget, and so difficult to clean!  Some people prefer to lay down a large tarp in the truck bed to help with easier clean-up.  It's totally up to you.  Also, please keep in mind that although we will do our very best to keep your truck clean, a little bit of mulch overflow onto your cab and/or bumper is almost inevitable.  Don't worry, we do account for spillage when we load the bucket so we won't load you with less than you paid for.  If you've got a brand new truck and you're leary of getting mulch on it, we suggest you just let us deliver it right to your house.
