Soil Additives
Soil additives are applied to soil to enhance nutrients or adjust pH.  Below is a list of the additives we carry, what they do, and how often they should be used.  You may also wish to read about Soil Conditioners, which are added to change the constitution and quality of the soil.

Adjusting pH

Garden Lime (Espoma)
: raises pH level to make soil less acidic/more basic, which is how most plants thrive.  Use in spring or fall.

Hydrated Lime (Get-a-Lawn):

Pelletized Calcium (Mir-i-cal/Mag-i-cal):

Pelletized Lime (Agway):

Foods & Fertilizers

Aluminum Sulfate (Bonide)
: lowers the pH to make soil more acidic for acid-loving plants; turns hydrangeas blue.  Use in early spring and reapply until the desired pH is reached.

Blood Meal (Miracle-Gro): a natural nitrogen supplement that enhances flowering.  Apply every two months.

Bone Meal (Miracle-Gro): a natural phosphorous supplement that promotes root development.  Apply once in spring and again in fall for bulbs only.

Bulb Tone (Espoma): monthly additive for all bulbs & tubers.

Flower Tone (Espoma): monthly general additive for flowering plants.

Rose Tone (Espoma): rose maintenance additive that should be applied once a month from the beginning of the growing season through mid-September.

Quick Solutions (Espoma): monthly general additive with ideal nutrient ratio of nitrogen, phosphorous and potash.  Use the 10-10-10 product for all-pupose care of any flowering plant.  Use the 5-10-5 product for all -purpose care that specifically promotes rooting (great for newly planted flowering perennials and shubs).

Triple Phosphate (Espoma): helps stimulate early root development and aids in fruit and flower formation for lawns, flowers, shrubs & veggies.  Apply once in the early season or when planting.
