Spring Checklist
Seed & fertilize your lawn: if you're going to follow the Scotts LawnPro 4-step program, use Step 1 Crabgrass Preventer plus Fertilizer for established grass, or Step 1 for Seeding if you're also putting down seed. If you're not doing the 4-step program, then you'll want to use either the Super Turf Builder with Halts Crabgrass Preventer, or Starter Fertilizer plus Crabgrass Preventer.
Clean your garden beds: turn old mulch and remove leaves and other debris.
Re-mulch: putting down new mulch now will save weeding time later in the season.
Re-edge garden beds: for a seamless look, dig a small trench a few inches deep all around your beds to differentiate between lawn and garden. This will also help keep the mulch tidy. You may also choose to use wood or brick to line the garden, or try metal or plastic garden fencing (we carry only the traditional scalloped plastic edging).
Trim fruit trees: if you didn't trim in winter, be sure to prune early in the spring before buds bloom or your crop will be small or nonexistent.
Deadhead bulbs: remove spent blossoms from spring-flowering bulbs, but remember to let the foliage die back without removing it. This allows the bulbs to reabsorb the energy and nutrients from the foliage and store it up for next bloom. It's an important part of the bulb's life cycle, and if you prune back the leaves while they're still green, you'll stunt the plant's ability to bloom.
Prune spring-flowering shrubs: trim away spent blooms and thin too-thich branches to rejunvenate older plants..
